Farm Fourm 8: Slow Money. Anyone can invest locally, here's how!

  • Altona Grange Hall (map)

What would the planet look like if we invested in our friends and neighbors?
+
What if all the money in the stock market was invested locally, or in people or things you believe in?
+
Today, most money is invested in far away things that most people don't understand, in companies maligned with personal beliefs. Money is made at a large social and environmental cost.
+
Climate change is a wonderful example of everything that is wrong with the current financial and investment economy. Oil companies and Big Ag are safe, productive (short-term) investments that ravage the earth with greenhouse gases and degrade ecosystems and the people that depend on them.
+
It’s time to put some money back into the soil, where is belongs. It’s time to reinvent capitalism so that money is made by building a vibrant, safer and healthier world.
+
How do we do this? We can invest in the farmers and ranchers tending the earth, healing the land, in our community.
+
Slow Money has launched a fund, called SOIL, which does just this. It makes 0% loans to stewards of the earth. The fund is just getting underway and we invite YOU to participate.
+
Come learn about Slow Money. Learn about SOIL. Consider participating SOIL. Learn about how local investing can change the world and our community. This could be your chance to invest in the food system locally and deepen your own belonging to our community. Like an ecosystem, our community is made stronger by the virtue and number of our interactions and dependencies.
+
The SOIL Fund is a much bigger concept than simply lowering return expectations because one ‘cares about people or the environment’. SOIL is about reinventing the very notion of ‘returns’. Its about reimagining wealth, retooling capitalism and tuning financial expectations to the pace, bounty and regenerative potential of the earth.
